Why FUTSAL and SMALL SIDED FOOTBALL?

"FUTSAL develops skill in young players like no other game..."

As a regular visitor to South America and a keen student of their coaching techniques, the late Johnny Warren believed their emphasis on FUTSAL was the key ingredient that placed the Brazilians at the top of the soccer world for skill.

He believed FUTSAL to be the best game in the world to develop skill in players..."all the amazing skills in senior players, all their wonderful feints & dribbles, come from having to play pressure games when they are young in an area restricted in space. If they can't dribble and find their own solution to limited space in FUTSAL they simply don't survive as a player!"

Juninho (of Sydney FC fame) - "Five-a-side gives you more skills. You have to think quickly & have good technique because it is in a short space...I started playing when I was six and stayed there till I was 13 and then went to 11-a-side." " In Brazil most players don't play 11-a-side football until they're 13...on a small pitch you need to have good control and move the ball around quickly.  There isn't much space so you need to be skilful. That is why Brazil always produces players with so much skill."

The honour roll list of players who played FUTSAL as juniors is endless. These include Ronaldhino, Robinho, Ronaldo, Pele, Zico, etc.

Even the English FA has recognised the technical and skill deficiencies in their own players, and is now actively promoting futsal and small sided games to increase the skill of English players...

Why is FUTSAL and SMALL SIDED FOOTBALL so good at developing skill in players?

Fewer players & a smaller pitch equals: 1) More touches, 2) More passes, 3) More goals, 4) More attack, 5) More defence, 6) Tactical or 'game' intelligence.

* The world's top educators agree that Small Sided Games (SSG) are the best way for children to learn tactical or 'game' intelligence. Once the child understands how 1 player can beat another with skill, or 2 players can easily combine to beat 1 via passing and movement, they then move to 3 vs 2, 4 vs 3, 5 vs 4, etc. These are the building blocks that have developed the world's best players.

In any form of soccer the way to move the ball upfield into the shooting zone is by beating a player with skill or speed, or by adding an extra player with pass and movement. These are the skills that are developed in futsal. Unfortunately, these skills are rarely developed in junior full field soccer because of the size of the field.

Also, 11 vs 11 has little real meaning to children because on most occassions, where the ball is will only involve two or three players. The player on the ball is generally only playing a 1 vs 1 or  2 vs 2 ,

3 vs 2, 3 vs 3, 4 vs 4, 5 vs 4 game anyway.

* Futsal/SSG is fast paced and demands involvement from all players. The game quickly exposes strengths & weaknesses in the individual and team that may go unnoticed on the full field. The smart player and/or coach can then take steps to rectify any deficiencies...

* Futsal/SSG also uses a special ball. It is smaller & heavier than normal. This allows for more touches of the ball, encourages quality of technique and makes close control easier...

* To beat an opponent players must develop passing or dribbling moves to beat players, and rapid decision making...

* Futsal/SSG is played on a level surface. This is important because it is getting harder to play with skill on full fields because of the terrible effect of the drought. It is good for players to be able to play on a level field and be able to play with skill.

* Futsal/SSG does not encourage heavy tackling. Defence is conducted at a higher level - jockeying, interception, organisation, close marking, the ability to "steal" the ball...

* When the physical aggression is turned down, players have to focus on developing real skill to beat opponents.

* Futsal/SSG is a serious fitness workout. Players get very fit...

* The small pitch forces players to look up all the time. It teaches vision...

* Futsal/SSG teaches formation and tactical principles on a level that juniors understand. It teaches tactical principles that are easily understood...

FUTSAL or indoor soccer or outdoor SMALL SIDED FOOTBALL?

Futsal and outdoor SSG is the only 5-a-side game endorsed by FIFA and the Football Federation of Australia.

Futsal/SSG does not reward inaccurate shooting or passing.

The futsal ball can only be played well with correct technique.

The Club
St George Futsal Club is a young club and has around 480 registered players between the ages of 5 and adult. We are looking to increase our player numbers and ages and welcome enquiry. We currently play at 29A Greenacre Road, Connells Point and 2A Boundary Road, Mortdale on Saturday mornings and Monday and Wednesday evenings under lights.

The Field

We are fortunate to play on an artificial turf surface to allow for more games and skill training for our members. We seek to encourage the development of highly skilled, team players and would encourage partnerships with like-minded clubs and coaches.

GREAT NEWS: St George Futsal SSF are proud to develop SMALL SIDED FOOTBALL through our partnership with FC Barcelona Australasia through their Community Football Program. We support the community values of FCB, their great charity work in Australia and around the world, and look forward to assisting them to implement their football systems in Australia.
